How to Troubleshoot Tumble Dryer Problems on Laundry Day

by David Hart

Unless you live in a very temperate climate, you probably need a tumble dryer to dry your clothes quickly and effectively for your busy family. In fact, you have almost certainly come to rely on this machine and only perform your laundry chores "just-in-time" and without any margin for error. So, you may be understandably fraught if your dryer refuses to cooperate when the clock is ticking, such as when your child needs their sports kit for a big game. How can you troubleshoot this situation quickly?

Where to Start

A tumble dryer is not the most sophisticated appliance, and when it doesn't work, there are usually only a few places to look. If you're lucky, you may be able to introduce a quick fix and get back to normal with minimal delay.

Heating Maladies

For example, if the dryer is producing no heat, look in the owner's manual to see if it has a reset button. Sometimes, you will find it on the back of the machine and if so, try pressing it to see if that makes a difference. Also, when was the last time you looked at the filter or checked the vent pipe that removes heat to the outside? If this is full of lint or fluff, clean it out and see if that helps.

This machine will have a thermostat, and it may be accessible. If not, or if it turns out to be faulty, it may need to be replaced.

Motor Problems

If the machine turns on and you can hear the motor running, but the drum does not turn, this may be a relatively easy fix—but a job for the professionals. It's likely that the belt has slipped or may have broken and is unable to transfer drive from the motor to the drum. If the drum does not turn and you cannot hear the motor whirring, the capacitor may need to be replaced.

Door Issues

Before you run out of options and need to call in the experts, double-check to make sure that you have closed the door correctly. They do require a firm push as they will need to create a good seal, and they are designed to stay in the "off" position unless the door is fully closed. There is also a possibility that the door switch is not working as it should, even though everything is tightly shut. If this is the case, it will need to be replaced by an expert.

The Outcome

Hopefully, you will have found and fixed a small problem and can get on with your laundry day. If not, contact an electrician who handles appliance repairs
