Tips for Choosing the Perfect Installation Location for Outdoor CCTV Cameras

by David Hart

In the 1990s, you could only spot surveillance cameras in banks and public spaces. However, today, you will find these security devices everywhere, including in homes. CCTV cameras are excellent burglar deterrent tools. The idea that one's face will be captured on camera is enough to deter would-be intruders from your property. However, surveillance cameras are only effective when installed in the right location. Therefore, as you prepare for the installation, here are a few tips to help you choose the perfect spot.

Assess the viewing area

Before installing surveillance cameras, determine the viewing area. What's the target perimeter you need to be covered by the cameras? Does the chosen location cover this area sufficiently, or does it create blind spots? For example, installing a camera at the corner of an exterior wall can limit its view. On the other hand, placing the camera in the direct view of the target area increases its efficiency.

Consider your home's perimeter

Your home's perimeter acts as the first entry point for intruders. If you don't have a burglar-deterrent fence, it would be a great idea to install surveillance cameras at intervals around your perimeter. These deter intruders from attempting to jump over your picket fence or cut through your chain wire fencing. Remember, once an intruder is on your property, they can steal outdoor valuables or find blind spots and access your house. Therefore, deter them from accessing your property by installing perimeter surveillance.

Install CCTV in hidden entry points

When most people think about intrusions, they only consider the entry door and patio door. Unfortunately, homes have various hidden areas that act as suitable entry points for intruders. They include the garage door, back and basement windows, second-floor balcony and secondary doors. Yards with large trees also create perfect stake-out points for intruders. Install surveillance to cover these areas and deter criminals from breaking into your home.

Consider lighting in installation areas

Have you ever seen CCTV footage with blurred video? The low quality of the footage makes it almost impossible to identify crime perpetrators. Unfortunately, this will happen if you don't consider the lighting in the installation location. Adequate lighting allows the cameras to refine details such as the facial features of intruders. Thus, as you install your CCTV cameras, consider these issues:

  • Choose locations that receive adequate sunlight during the day
  • Avoid tilting cameras towards the sun as the glare can cause interference

If the location doesn't have adequate lighting, go for infrared cameras. These have night vision capabilities, and they can turn the feature on during times of low lighting and total darkness.

Consider the above things when installing CCTV cameras in your home. For professional CCTV installation assistance, consult an electrician.
